He is a furry red monster with a falsetto voice, who hosts the last full fifteen-minute segment on Sesame Street, "Elmo's World", which is aimed at toddlers. He was most often puppeteered by Kevin Clash from 1985 until late 2012. When Clash has been resigned from Sesame Workshop, he has been puppeteered by Ryan Dillon from 2012 to the present day.

In MYCUN, Elmo makes a minor speaking cameo appearance, voiced by Tara Strong, where he was one of Carrie Underwood's minions while introducing her and her minions to Gabriel Garza and the MYCUNs when they got caught by Carrie and her minions, but Carrie replies that they won't see Elmo once again due to his show, Sesame Street, having a worm singer named "Carrie Underworm". After the introduction of Carrie Underwood and her henchmen, he already left the Wooden Underwood Enterprises.
